Why do betta fish change their colors?

Someone bought a red betta from their local pet shop but now they have a red and blue betta fish. Sounds familiar? If so, several factors are to be blamed. A betta fish changing its color is unquestionably not a good sign, indicating a stressed-out betta.

If you are facing the same problem, continue reading the article below to figure out what is stressing your little one out.

Unhygienic and poor water quality

By unhygienic, we mean that betta fish eat, swim, and discharge their wastes in the same water. So things can become nasty within no time. A disturbed water parameter, such as too high or too low temperature, a fluctuated pH from neutral, etc. Van all harm your betta. To avoid it, a proper filtration system should be set up, and water should be changed once or twice a week.

Incorrect food type

Giving improper food to betta fish can make them hungry and stressed out. Various food types are available in the market now, so getting confused is an understatement. As betta fish is a carnivorous specie, its diet should contain lots of protein. Look for the labels on the back or buy a betta-specific diet.

Inadequate hiding spots

Your betta fish can become stressed out if it cannot find a good hiding spot. Just like humans will be stressed out or won't feel safe by sleeping on the street in the middle of the night, these creatures too! These spots provide them with privacy, and a means to hide from other predators.

Diseases

As physical diseases, there are mental and chemical diseases too! A stressful betta is more susceptible to these diseases. Some physical illnesses might be ich, mouth fungus, fin or tail rot, eye cloud, or fish fungus. Be aware of some of the contagious diseases and seek out help immediately. Do not discharge your fish with these diseases, as they can destroy the ecosystem there!

Infection

A weaker immune system means a chain of diseases. The immune system is distributed by infections or by parasites. These parasites take up nutrients from the betta fish that are essential for their body, resulting in decreased immune system efficiency. Several medicines are present for these infections, but you must act fast, as some infections might be fast-acting.

Improper light

Betta fish have a symbiotic relationship with bacteria living in their bodies, providing them with the nutrients they need. This bacterium needs proper lighting to carry out its function. Using a bulb that does not give them their required light can cause under-development of the bacteria. Betta-specific lights are available that also comes with an automatic on-off system.

Bottom line

Betta changing its color should not be ignored and taken care of immediately because it, in no case, is a good sign. Moreover, when buying, remember that cheap betta fish does not mean it is healthy. Often, an unhealthy betta doesn't show definite signs and is hard to notice.

Betta fish is not at all a starter fish, as it requires intense and constant care. But if provided with proper care and environment, betta fish can thrive with a life expectancy of about 3-4 years. In rare cases, it can survive for 5-7 years too!
